Blog Assingment 1

This book, as seen on the front cover, was a National Bestseller and called, "Simply wonderful", by the Los Angeles Times. The name of the book could indicate that the "Garcia Girls" are Hispanic, and after reading the back cover I was able to determine they are from the Dominican Republic. Based off the  title I predicted the book would be about sisters who are trying to forget their Spanish background in their new home. Once reading the summary on the back page I found my assumption was correct. The book is about the Garcia sisters who flee from the Dominican Republic to New York City. Their main concerns are forgetting their past and fitting in to this new society. When you first open the book you see the family tree. Without even having to read it you can determine that a main theme of the book is family dynamics and the importance of one's family ties and how it affects them. As you begin to look through the family tree,  you can see they have originated from the Conquistadors, which can play a big role throughout the story. As I began to read through the first few pages of the book, a  few major themes jumped out at me. For one it reminded me of the family dynamics from the Bonesetters Daughter because of the role family plays between the characters. Also there is a   alot of description which allows me to see the setting very easily. Overall I look forward to reading more of the book.

  1. I completely agree with you man, I too am very excited to go more in depth to this book after reading the back cover and the first chapter. I agree that family dynamics are an important motif; however it is not the most important. The title is called how the Garcia Girls lost their accents. I made an inference that they are trying to get accustomed to the new setting and country like in the Bonesetters Daughter and try to live according to American customs. So I don't see the book relating all to family dynamics, but more of cultural importance and background. Overall, everything else you posted was very interesting and it was cool to take your point of view versus mine.

  2. In reading your opneing thoughts on the novel i was glad to see that you came to some of the same conclusions that i did. I too said that based off simply the title that the girls are obviouslt of somekind of hispanic culture. i also said that it would appear as if fmaily dynamics (specifically between the sisters) will play a magor role/motif in this novel. You and Eun both discussed the similarites to the BSD book that this novel has and i found that interesting.

  3. I also agree with your post. By reading the title I could also tell that the book was going to be about Hispanic sisters. I think that family dynamics is also going to be a factor throughout the book. Since this book was a national best seller and called "simply wonderful" by Los Angelas times, I think that this is also going to be a great book. Another aspect of the book that's going to be seen alot throughout the story line is culture because in the title it says how the girls lost there accents which deals with culture.

  4. Tommy I totally agree with you. You make a lot of valid points. Reading the title was also something i concluded to. This is definitely going to be about girls with Hispanic backgrounds. I thought that this might lead to them being so immersed into a new culture and thats how they lose their accents. I am very excited to be starting a new book. Definitely after reading the back and all the different reviews and interested me into reading more. Julia Alvarez seems like a good author. After reading the first few pages it caught my eye. Hopefully this book will be better than Bone-setters. At least maybe more interesting. The front cover also seems interesting. Especially the picture.
