Blog Assingment 1

This book, as seen on the front cover, was a National Bestseller and called, "Simply wonderful", by the Los Angeles Times. The name of the book could indicate that the "Garcia Girls" are Hispanic, and after reading the back cover I was able to determine they are from the Dominican Republic. Based off the  title I predicted the book would be about sisters who are trying to forget their Spanish background in their new home. Once reading the summary on the back page I found my assumption was correct. The book is about the Garcia sisters who flee from the Dominican Republic to New York City. Their main concerns are forgetting their past and fitting in to this new society. When you first open the book you see the family tree. Without even having to read it you can determine that a main theme of the book is family dynamics and the importance of one's family ties and how it affects them. As you begin to look through the family tree,  you can see they have originated from the Conquistadors, which can play a big role throughout the story. As I began to read through the first few pages of the book, a  few major themes jumped out at me. For one it reminded me of the family dynamics from the Bonesetters Daughter because of the role family plays between the characters. Also there is a   alot of description which allows me to see the setting very easily. Overall I look forward to reading more of the book.
